( Tips...)
So much depends on the quality of leather, of course. We use only the finest tanned top grade cattle hides from top British and European tanners. All our upholstery covers are hand cut to templates from full hides. It's the only way to achieve a uniform quality and finish. All leathers used by Chesterfield have been produced to the relevant European production standards for upholstery leathers.
You have three Leather options; plain matt, antique rub off leather or aniline leather.
a) Plain Corrected leather
The plain finishes offer a single solid colour which are normally chosen for the more contemporary styles.
b) Chesterfield Antique, Rub off Leather
Our Antique finish enhances buttoned furniture with the patina of a genuine, well preserved antique.
To achieve the antique effect, the tannery dyes the leather the desired colour and then stains the top surface with a dark floranteak.
The furniture is upholstered in the traditional way and then using a special solvent supplied by the tanners, the top layer of floranteak is gently removed by hand, gradually highlighting the raised areas, but leaving the buttoned areas dark. The final stage is the application of a special sealant which enhances the natural lustre of the leather. This leather is the natural choice for families with children and customers that are looking for a long-lasting quality-sofa.
Skill and know-how at its best.
This type of leather is the standard leather for all our Brittish made Chesterfields.
c) Aneline Leather
The Aneline Leathers is pure natural colored through, leather without any laquer, ment for more careful use. This is the finest, best looking and most expensive leather You can buy, but there is also a serious negative side to this type of leather. These leathers are more delicate because there are no protective laquer on the leather. Therefore it can easily get lasting stains if someone drop a glass of win in Your sofa. This is the reason why we do not recommend this type of leather for families with small children.
Aneline leather are normally waxed to create a more resisting surface, that also deepen the colours.
Since it has no protective laquer, this type of leather also fades more easily in strong sunlight.
Despite these drawbacks, pure Aneline leather is selling well to customers that appreciate the delicate soft touch of the leather, and its beautyful colours and finish that no other leather can offer.

Different furniture shapes require different suspension systems to produce the correct “feel” to the sitting position. At Chesterfield you can rely on us to make the right choice. We use either the interwoven elastabelt system, metal serpentine springs or coil sprung units dependent upon the individual furniture shape and the sitting posture required. As the suspension is the “heart” of any piece of furniture, reliability is a high priority and we choose only the finest raw materials from proven suppliers.
Comfort is all important with any piece of furniture, it’s so easy for the result to be too hard or too soft. To achieve the correct balance requires an individual combination of different high density fillings to ensure lasting shape retention and optimum comfort.
Our standard cushion fillers are constructed from the very latest combustion modified high resilient foams. Dacron fillings are available as an optional extra. All of the cushions on all of the styles mentioned have zipped covers, so that any cushions or cushion fillers can be replaced at a later date.
The frame is the strength and backbone of any piece of furniture. We use only the finest quality beech hardwood. Hardly the cheapest solution, but indisputably the best. We use beech hardwood because it is a straight grained timber with a few knots.
An absence of knots is an absence of weak points and straight grained means no warping or twisting.
For added strength all joints are dowelled and glued with screwed corner strengthening blocks.
For all our occasional furniture items, the frames are of solid hardwoods. These are built traditionally to the same exacting standards before being stained and polished to enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
All polished frame items are available in three wood finished. Mahogany, Dark Oak and Yew.
We choose orbit style castors (small metal wheels instead of standard wooden legs), widely regarded as the very best. One person can move any piece of Chesterfield`s furniture easily. It will simply glide across your room. Of course You need to consider the quality of Your floor before choosing this solution. Only solid hardwood floors are recommended for this solution.
Wooden Bun Feet
An attractive alternative to castors are our Wooden Bun Feet. These solid wooden bun feet not only give an authentic visual finish to the base of your furniture but are ideal for polished wooden or tiled floors.
Available in Mahogany, Dark Oak and Yew finishes. (Bun Feet are fitted as standard on all Contemporary styles and are available as an optional extra on traditional and Classic styles – see price list)
